Program Purpose
The Native Youth Leadership Council is open to Native Youth ages 12-18 years old who want to become active community members, learn skills to become future leaders, take pride in Native culture and demonstrate good physical health.
Program Key Features
In keeping with our Mission Statement as listed under the program purpose, we carry out various program activities on a weekly basis that consists' of leadership development, physical activity, and other wellness activities. The Youth Group has conducted small fundraisers (Indian Taco sales) to fund their attendance at a recent Native Leadership conference held in San Diego, California (November, 2004). Through consensus building, the Youth Group held an election (January 2005), to elect a "King" and "Queen" to govern youth activities. In addition the youth group created a "Code of Conduct" governing youth behavior during meetings and community events.
Most Excited About
We are excited about getting our Native community involved in fitness and exercise through education, sports and cultural activities. We are proud of the fact that we have for the past 3 years hosted our annual Youth Olympics that is attended by over 300 local Native youth and parents whom have a fun filled day of sports, healthy food and family fun. We pride ourselves being on the front lines of combating the diabetes epidemic, making small but continual strides towards a healthier Native American people.
