Program: AIDC 100 Mile Club

What

General Exercise

Participants "track" their miles of activity for whatever kind of activity they want to pursue. Periodic award events celebrate the accomplishments of all!

Tribes Involved:
Navajo, Pueblo, Apache

Location:
Workplace
Participants exercise on their own. Celebrations occur at the Albuquerque Indian Health Service Dental Clinic.

Program Purpose:
Similar to Just Move It, 100 Mile Club was implemented to encourage physical activity in a fun, non-threatening way.

Program Key Features:
100 Mile Club is a voluntary activity. Participants sign a release form and then are provided a mileage tracking form that covers 3 months at a time. Participants can use 20 minutes of ANY kind of physical activity to represent 1 mile. With no vending machines on site, 100 Mile Club also purchases beverages and snacks that all employees can purchase. Proceeds support the celebrations at the end of the mileage tracking quarters.

Most Excited About:
Program coordinators change about every other year. At this time, we have integrated sending of messages of health to all employees periodically; i.e., stress reduction tips, ideas for how to safely start exercising, suggestions for drinking enough water, etc. etc. Feedback has been very positive.

Program Age Groups:
Adult

Community:
Clinic staff of approximately 35 include residents from many of New Mexico's Indian Communities including Navajo, Apache, many of the State's Pueblos, as well as urban populations.
