Description
The Canyon Walk was a wonderful opportunity to be a part of the National Native American Health and Fitness Day and continue our partnership with the I.H.S. Just Move It program. The event hosted 139 participants, which was a fantastic turnout, 38 more than last year, for this event! I was very pleased with the participation of the ninety-five (95) community members, and the forty-five 45 clinic staff that were present.
This year, participants received Long-sleeve T-shirts, Water Bottle holders, First Aid/Type 2 Crash Kits, chapstick, and pedometers. We also offered a light breakfast and healthy sandwich box lunch for all of our participants. This was the first year we had a blessing offered before the walk statrted, a message from our Tribal Board president, a DJ to motivate the participants, a jumper for the small children, Walk Dedications (see below), and 4 generations participate in the walk! It was great to see Morongo Community Members, Torres-Martinez Community members, and Clinic Employees take the first step to improving their lifestyles through fitness.
The hardest part is getting started, and I was blessed to experience the first step and continued strides to a better quality of life with these individuals. I look forward to our turnout this year...let’s try for 165 participants!
Best Features
The increase in participation!
Creative Features
The walk dedications! Here are some submissions:
"I dedicate this walk to my family and those loved ones we’ve lost."
"I dedicate this walk to myself. I am glad to be healthy and I am thankful for another day!"
"I dedicate this walk to all who made this event possible. Thank you!"
"I dedicate this walk to my children. I want to teach, by example, how to be healthy so they can do this with their own families in the future."
"I dedicate this walk to my oldest sister who has lung cancer, and my middle sister who is a breast cancer survivor."
Challenges
We needed walkie-talkies to coordinate with our team and first aid booth in case of an emergency and to stay in touch.
Lessons Learned
We used the Fire Dept.'s walkie-talkies, and we plan to buy some of our own.
Future Plans
Keep doing this event, and motivating other communities to start wellness events of their own!
